FAA-Approved

The FAA-Approved Rabin Cone Contrast Test™ is one of the computerized color vision methods officially recognized by the FAA and compliant with the latest regulatory standards for new applicants. Unlike traditional pass-or-fail tests, it provides a precise, quantitative score of red, green, and blue cone sensitivity, offering a clearer picture of visual function. As a digital, computer-based test, it is both fast and reliable, with immediate results that can be taken directly to your Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).

FAA Color Vision Testing Policy Update (Effective Jan 1, 2025)

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has revised its standards for pilot color vision testing. Under the new policy, the Rabin Cone Contrast Test™ (RCCT) is officially recognized as one of three FAA-approved color vision tests for commercial pilots.

All pilots are required to pass one of these approved tests in order to avoid a flying restriction. The RCCT may be used as an alternative if a pilot does not pass another approved method. In addition, periodic retesting is required for individuals with certain medical conditions or those taking medications that can affect color vision.

In many cases, RCCT exams may also be covered by insurance.

Routine Color Vision Screening

In addition to one-time hereditary color vision screening, routine color vision screening must be performed for all pilots with a medical condition, or who takes a medication, which could affect color vision.

Conditions include:

  • Eye conditions such as glaucoma, AMD, retinal detachment, or cataracts
  • Brain and nervous system conditions such as Alzheimer’s, MS, or certain tumors
  • Medical conditions such as diabetes, alcoholism, leukemia
  • Medications such as Plaquenil, blood pressure medications, and erectile dysfunction medications
  • Other conditions affecting color vision

Macular Degeneration & Contrast Sensitivity

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can affect more than how clearly you see on a standard eye chart.  Changes in the macula may also affect contrast sensitivity and color vision, sometimes making it more difficult to distinguish subtle differences in color or see objects clearly against similar backgrounds.

The Rabin Cone Contrast Test (RCCT) measures color contrast sensitivity and may provide additional information about visual function in patients with macular degeneration.
